From helping others to helping myself through writing
My journey to writing began unexpectedly. As a paramedic, and later an intensive care paramedic, my life was dedicated to helping others. Writing, however, became a way to help myself. It's an escape that allows my mind to explore places it might never otherwise go.
I first dipped my toes into the world of writing through short, 25-word-or-less competitions. To my surprise, I started winning – everything from movie tickets to holidays and even a car! These wins sparked a question: could I actually be a writer?
Unique perspectives shaped by life's experiences
Building on my early competition successes, I decided to formally pursue writing by completing a course with the Australian Writers' Centre. This training ignited a passion, and now I have several children's picture book manuscripts and a 90,000-word adult literary fiction manuscript under my belt. It's a taste I've truly developed a fondness for.
My background as a paramedic has provided me with a wealth of experiences and observations to draw upon, especially for my adult literary fiction. I love connecting with people and listening to the who, what, where, when, and why of their lives. These conversations are a profound source of inspiration for my stories.
The 'feel' and 'vibe' of my writing
My children's books are primarily written in rhyme. While some readers adore this style and others find it challenging, what truly matters is what the children think! Those who have read Freddie Bear lost his Hair absolutely love it, which is the greatest reward.
For my adult literary fiction, my paramedic career has given me an unparalleled insight into human nature and the intricacies of life. I thrive on genuine conversations and the rich narratives people share. This deep well of human experience forms the core inspiration for my adult stories, allowing me to explore complex themes with authenticity.
